A DAY UNDER THE CANOPY
Our guest starts the day heading into the forest of Bukit Lawang, following the trail beneath a thick canopy of towering trees.
It doesn’t take long for the village to disappear behind him. The trail winds through the forest, with roots, climbs, and plenty of greenery along the way. Every now and then, the trees open up and give a glimpse of just how deep into the jungle he has gone.
Of course, there is one thing everyone is hoping to see.
Orangutans.
After some time on the trail, the first sighting comes. An orangutan appears in the trees above, moving through the branches with the kind of ease that makes the whole experience feel worthwhile. Our guest gets a chance to stop, take a few photos, and simply enjoy the moment.
The trek continues, with lunch waiting somewhere along the way. Sitting down for a meal in the middle of the jungle is a pretty good change of scenery. No walls, no busy restaurant, just fresh air, forest sounds, and plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings before heading back onto the trail.
The trees become part of the experience too. Some rise high above the canopy, with trunks large enough to make our guest look rather small in comparison. Naturally, it would be rude not to stop for a photo.
After exploring the jungle, spotting wildlife, and taking in the sights of Bukit Lawang, the adventure wraps up on the Bahorok River.
Hop onto an inner tube and let the river carry you downstream, passing through the lush surroundings of the village. It’s a relaxed and playful way to finish the trek, with plenty of time to enjoy the cool water and scenery before making your way back.
From jungle trails to river currents, it’s a pretty great way to end a day in Bukit Lawang.
